CMPA Congress 2005


The first-ever CMPA Congress was held in Quebec City from 30 August to 2 September, 2005 and had as its theme Canadian Pilotage: Safety, Security, Efficiency.

The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Admiral Efthimios E. Mitropoulos, participated at the Congress, helping to establish the important nature of the proceedings and to confirm the broad appeal of the event to the entire marine community.

In conjunction with the Congress, the Honorable Jacques Saada, member of the federal Cabinet, officially opened the Lower St. Lawrence pilots’ Marine Simulation and Resource Centre.

The CMPA Award for Outstanding Contribution to Marine Safety was presented to Mr. Bill O’Neil. Mr. O’Neil had a long and distinguished career, both in Canada and internationally, including mandates as Assistant Deputy Minister (Marine) at Transport Canada, Commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard, President and Chief Executive Officer of the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority, and Secretary-General of the IMO.
