CMPA Code of Conduct

The Code formally expresses the values that Canadian pilots hold in common and their standards for professional behaviour. By formally describing these values and standards and sharing them with the entire membership, the Association’s intention is to reinforce the sense of responsibility that every pilot has to discharge his duties in an exemplary way and to work with others to ensure a safe and efficient marine industry.

Code of Conduct for CMPA Members

It is the duty of marine pilots, in the conduct of their work, to act in the public interest, strictly adhering to the following principles:

ensure marine transportation safety is the paramount consideration in the discharge of their responsibilities;
uphold their good reputation for independent judgement by refraining from engaging in any activities that could compromise, or could be seen to compromise that independence;
maintain the physical fitness and the technical proficiency required for the performance of their duties in a manner that reflects the high standards of their profession.

As members of the Association, marine pilots are expected to govern their behaviour in accordance with the following values:

professionalism: always act in a manner that brings credit to the piloting profession;
collegiality: share knowledge and experience with other pilots and their organizations and extend to them the courtesy, cooperation and solidarity that is due to colleagues;
collaboration: work collaboratively with other parties to promote a safe and vibrant marine transportation sector.
